By: Cindy K. Several times over the summer I have seen something questionable about the trees along Cazenovia Creek, in Cazenovia Park. I took a few pictures the other day of two different trees, perfectly healthy trees.

It seems this occurs in the middle of the night, but why?
Is this a deliberate attempt to have trees fall down “on their own”?
Doesn’t anyone realize the danger involved by weakening the base of these trees?

If the trees need to be removed, why is it being done in such an unsafe way?

Is there a cost difference in having a tree cut down the regular way vs. cutting up/hauling away a tree that quote “fell down”?

Who is doing this, and why?

The Buffalo Charity Ball Committee has announced the two beneficiaries for the 3rd Annual Buffalo Ball. Angel Flight & Project FLIGHT will be the primary beneficiaries of this year’s proceeds. The 3rd Annual Buffalo Ball will once again be held at the Statler Tower’s Golden Ballroom on Saturday, December 27, 2008 from 7 P.M. to 11 P.M. A record 700 people attended last year’s ball which raised over $13,000 for local charities. Hospice Buffalo and Re-Tree WNY were the primary beneficiaries of last year’s event and received $6,500 each.

Angel Flight is a volunteer corps of private pilots who combine their love of flying with the spirit of grassroots volunteerism by flying patients and their families to the critical health care they need. Joey DeMarco is a local pilot that has flown numerous families from around the Western New York region for treatment purposes. Angel Flight provides air transportation in private aircraft by volunteer pilots so that children and adults may access life saving medical care free of charge. Angel Flight is also a vital mode of transportation for organs, blood and for patients awaiting organ transplants.

Project FLIGHT is a not-for-profit organization devoted to promoting literacy in children and caregivers, through school and family literacy initiatives. It works collaboratively with practitioners, schools, community organizations and businesses locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally to achieve its objectives. Ball goers can also bring a new book to the ball in support Project FLIGHT.

The Buffalo Ball was established to bring together Buffalonians, both current and displaced, during the holiday season. It is an opportunity for all to visit with old friends and make new ones, all while benefiting important non-profit groups in the great city we call “home”. Buffalo is truly the ‘City of Good Neighbors’, and we hope to revitalize this lively community spirit in all those present at the Buffalo Ball. Last year’s semi-formal/formal event attracted over 700 local residents as well as those home for the holidays, which included displaced Buffalonians from 19 different states.

*Admission will be a donation of $45
(online pre-sale only until December 19, 2008)
*$50 at the door
*complimentary cocktails and hors-d’oeuvres,
*music, dancing and the company of friends, both old and new.

To purchase advanced tickets, please visit www.thebuffaloball.org.

In light of Governor Paterson’s State budget and the slashes he’s recommending within, Assemblyman Mark J. F. Schroeder was interviewed by channel 2 news yesterday of proposed cuts. Schroeder, a proponent of education, said he’d now support cuts to education.

Assemblyman Mark Shroeder, also a democrat, said he would be willing to consider any and all cuts except those impacting senior citizens, veterans or the disabled.

The South Buffalo Education Center, sponsored by the Assemblyman, offers GED & adult computer training classes for area residents, will this valuable asset become victim among supporting these new budget cuts? Could South Buffalo cope with another loss to Seneca Street or the loss of young adults seeking a highschool diploma?

If not, what may come to Southside Elementary, Buffalo’s largest school, or South Park High? How are children to learn if funding is continually taken away?

Just last year, Schroeder’s desire to fund education therein his Assembly district seemed as “top priority”

Progress was made in adult education, but Schroeder says more help is needed

New York State Assemblyman Mark Schroeder said that this year’s state budget will be remembered for its commitment to improving education across the state, including his district.

“This year’s budget has the largest investment in education in the history of New York State,” said Schroeder. “All four of the districts that I represent – Buffalo, West Seneca, Lackawanna, and Orchard Park – received substantial increases in aid compared to last year.”

So one like myself can only begin to wonder why the re-elected Assemblyman would flip-flop on education especially since Schroeder’s Assembly webpage says this:

…. he started the South Buffalo Education Center, which offers free GED and computer classes. More than 200 students have earned their G.E.D and countless more have completed the computer training since the school first opened its doors in 2002. As an assemblyman, Schroeder has advocated that more resources and attention be devoted to adult education across the state.

How easy is it to carry a double-edge sword? Supporting education or supporting unfunding education, the sword cuts both ways and this is not going to be good for South Buffalo.

3 teammates from Buffalo United (now Empire USA) are in Conference Playoffs as freshmen for college teams in the NJ/NYC Area.

Shea Sullivan (Mt Mercy Academy) has played in all 23 games this season, starting in 16 as a Midfielder, and 3 of 5 as Keeper for Georgian Court University of Lakewood NJ, CACC (Central Atlantic Athletic Conf), 12-6-5, 10-1-3, and on a 15 game unbeaten streak. GCU recruited Shea as a GK to compete with their 2 time all conference Sophmore Keeper. Surprised at Shea’s strength and depth as a field player, contibutions were immediate as a playmaker, helping GCU to CACC 2nd seed, and top 2 stats in Points, Goals, Assists, Goals Against, Shutouts, and their 1st trip to the Conf Final (Sat Nov 8 in Philly), complimented by her roommates Honors for Most Goals in Conf and Rookie of Year Honors. Defeating Philadelphia University for the Conference Championship , GCU now advances to the NCAA Tournament with 1st Round action Friday Nov 14th.

Allie Weiser (Gr Island) has started Goal in 13 of 18 for CW Post, playing 1039 minutes, a .52 Goals Against Average, .878 Save Avg, 7 Shutouts, and a 10-1-1 record. CWP is 15-2-1, 8-1-0, and as 1st seed in the North East Conf, has home field advantage for Semi Finals (Fri 11/7), and Finals (11/9) in Brookville, NY. CWP has sustained Top 10 National Rankings, 3rd at the close of Regular Season. CWP now advances to the NCAA Tournament with a 1st round bye, and 2nd Round action Finals Sunday Nov 16th.

Amanda Wisotske (Our Lady of Mercy-Roch) is a Defender, Midfielder, Striker for NEC 1st seed Long Island University of Brooklyn (9-0-0; 16-4-1). Semi-Finals are Fri and Finals Sun 11/9. While a teammate with Allie & Shea, she also played as an opponent. A pivotal role comes in here. As a guest player, Amanda played for a number of ranked teams and in Nationally recognized tournaments. While playing in tourn at UNC (U of North Carolina), one coach eagerly recruited her. While promoting his team, the coach was asked what other positions he looking to fill. In that conversation he was told of a strong, skilled player, trained by the ODP Coach of the year (Even as a GK Coach) that had been an opponent and teammate. The rest is History. Both girls liked the coach and team, and talked of being roommates. That’s how one of the two learned of and linked with… …a Mercy College… …only one attended. Shea signed at GCU. Amanda signed an hour away at LIU… …while Allie ended up at CWP - another LIU Campus, almost in the next neighborhood.
