“Seneca Street business district improvement project”

By: CindyK. “Seneca Street business district improvement project” is the former “Seneca Street Redevelopment Project” of which is the former “Suddenly Seneca”…

Change the name but the status is still the same.

In waiting for Channel 4 news to put the 30 second blurb up on their website, I’ll leave you with the text of Mayor Byron Brown’s quote to the news today:

“We are seeing tremendous investment and interest in the growth and development that are taking place in the Seneca Street business district and the City is very pleased to be a partner in this development.” Mayor Brown.

News extra note:

The streetlights are part of the Seneca Street business district’s $1.3 million improvement project.

While we are pleased with today’s announcement that had been previously told here, we still wonder when the rest of the money will come to fix the actual road that we’ve been waiting about 7 years for while Seneca Street has gotten worse. The post is respectfully submitted with frustration in the waiting.

Eye on you: Cameras are coming to Seneca Street & South Buffalo

Filed under: Announcements, Seneca Street, Something good, South Buffalo — johnk @ 8:27 pm

In the coming weeks certain intersections along Seneca Street will be fitted for the first time with new cameras from the City of Buffalo. Areas that target the most trouble will be first. Seneca/Babcock, Seneca/Bailey, Seneca/Duerstein (St. John’s/Cazenovia Park).

duersteinsenecastreet.JPG

Before summer time, these high-tech cameras will be installed with the ability to see ¼ mile in every direction of their location.

To start six have been approved and will be set up in South Buffalo, another location considered is the South Park/Louisiana area.

While South Buffalo area Block Club leaders beleive there should be more in the wake of the big drug bust, some feel it’s a good start in watching the problems of the communities a little closer.

Seneca Street’s $300,000 quick fix

Filed under: Seneca Street, South Buffalo, This needs fixing, What a shame — johnk @ 11:18 am

Two months into the new year and the conclusion has been made, 2007 ended with yet another broken promise for Seneca Street

Erie County Legislator Tim Kennedy made the announcement last year while along with City of Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown at a community forum of Block Club leaders in South Buffalo.

Speaking on behalf of Congressman Brian Higgins, Assemblyman Mark Schroeder and Councilman Mickey Kearns, Kennedy said this past summer that $300,000 in funding would be used to replace the old street lights, it was said we would have “something better” than the standard street lights. It was said this part was the final phase to the revitalization of Seneca Street, yet the first phase from 3 years ago hasn’t begun.

Today, as we did on that warm day back in May, we have the same rusted up & “Mickey Mouse wired” street lights as before. Below are just a few of pictures that tell the real story of the “quick fix” being done.

The date: Tuesday, May 29, 2007

Erie County Legislator Tim Kennedy spoke on behalf of our elected leaders, within his 4 minute speech this is what he said:

“…Fact of the matter is, the money needs to be in place. And we were able to secure hundreds of thousands of dollars; I don’t know the exact numbers from Congressman Brian Higgins. Mark Schroeder was able to secure funding from the state, the county has a tendency of not coming into the City of Buffalo with their finances, hopefully when we get a county executive elected from the City of Buffalo that’s going to change, but until that happens we’ll put that on hold. But for the time being, there was one more step that needed to happen and the funding for Seneca Street development to surpass one million dollars that was $300,000 allocated from the City of Buffalo. That money is going to go to a specific piece of the revitalization of Seneca Street into the light standards on Seneca Street. Now when you talk about $300,000 and you think of light standards, we could have got the typical light standards that you see all over the City, or we could have gotten something a little bit better, a little more unique, and that cost over $300,000. But because of this Mayor’s dedication to this project, and because of the work of Congressman Brian Higgins, Assemblyman Mark Schroeder, and Councilmember Mickey Kearns working together this Mayor saw there was a viable project in the City of Buffalo that demanded attention and demanding commitment from his administration and that came in the form of $300,000. Thank you very much (to Mayor Brown) it’s a huge piece of that project.”

Click here to see what else the “Seneca Street Redevelopment” Project has lacking.

That was then, this is now. We have to ask ourselves “is this is really what $300,000 will bring to Seneca Street?” (before, during & after)

Buffalo has a snow shoveling law?

Filed under: Seneca Street, South Buffalo, This needs fixing — johnk @ 4:14 pm

By: CindyK

Yes, it does! But it’s seemingly ignored. :(

If the number of vacancies aren’t enough, every winter Seneca Street becomes pedestrian un-friendly because absentee property owners aren’t taking care of the sidewalks in front of their properties. Senior citizens with walkers, parents with strollers and small children are forced to walk in the street to get where they have to go.

There are good property owners who live up to the obligation of removing snow from the sidewalks around their businesses, but far less than those who don’t. South Buffalo is a walkable community, walkable, but difficult when property owners think laws don’t apply to them.

On a further note, when snow is removed in a timely manner from sidewalks, it should also be known the City of Buffalo street plow drivers come through at a high speed and what’s in the street is thrown on to the sidewalks and against the buildings. Thus, those who have cleared their sidewalks then have to do it again after the City makes it worse.
