Posted by CindyK. Seneca Indian Park is a shaded quaint little area that is said to be first the resting place of Seneca Cheif Red Jacket & his wife Mary Jemison. There isn't a playground here, there isn't even a bench for sitting. Just some trees, a few bushes, lots of grass and three dedication monuments. The stone steps up a small hill make it unique. It's set back from the corner of Buffum and Fields streets, if you didn't stop to look around, you probably wouldn't know what's there. When I first moved to South Buffalo and discovered this park, I got the impression it is like a mini history book that you can see and touch. If you sit and think long enough, you can almost feel its calming spiritual nature. (atleast for me, anyways) Tranquility in a residential neighborhood.
This line pretty much says it all:
The last traces in South Buffalo of the final bastions of Indian settlement in Western New York have long since been erased, but the richness of the history will always remain.
While South Buffalo today is in a little bit of a decline, it's the history like this that is needed so generations to come will know what once was here. The legacy of the Seneca Indians will always live on. These pictures can't capture the real feel Seneca Indain Park has to offer. Follow the map I made below and take a ride into the past.

I had to snap a picture of this as I walked down Buffum Street here in South Buffalo. There are about 5 streets to be repaved (that I know of). It's a sign of good things to come in our area of the city.

And since I had my camera, I thought I'd take a few nature pictures just for fun.

I guess "almost fixed" will do for now:

Considering it looked like this yesterday (and more than a year before):
HT the landscaping crew who not only did an awesome job on the planting, but who worked all morning and part of the afternoon in the rain to get it done.
After watching this project take shape for a few weeks now (here and here), the difference is remarkable. The pictures below explain how great it really looks.

At some time today hot pink painted lines were painted near the corners of Cazenovia & Seneca and at Cazenovia & North Legion. This is the start of the repave project.

They started working on new wiring and stuff yesterday and then left it. No truck came back today so I hope this doesn't get forgotten about.

Updated 7/25/07 with a new picture of the damage done by skateboarders.

It's only been about 2 weeks since the frame work of the Caz Street Gardens was finished and already the teenage skateboarders have it waxed up and looking like crap!
All I can say is, it takes good people, a lot of effort and a lot of respect to maintain niceness in our neighbordhoods and these kids have no consideration for city property intended to beautify a corner in South Buffalo.
It's a shame and a waste of good intentions.

Now that the sidewalks are all done, it will be a matter of time before repaving the street begins. Here are some pictures of what will have once been…

More comparison pictures of the great work that has been done on Cazenovia Street. There have been a lot of before/during/after pictures to show the construction process.

I love this last picture. The grass is beginning to grow. I see it as a sign of new life not just our own street, but for all of South Buffalo. It can only say… the best is yet to come.
